Saint Kentigern Middle College Learning Model.jpg

In recognition that boys and girls learn differently in their early teens and often achieve better outcomes in single-gender classrooms, over a decade ago, Saint Kentigern College established a very successful ‘parallel education model’.

In the Middle College (Years 7-10), our boys and girls are taught separately for all core curriculum subjects. This model allows these younger students to learn in an environment best suited to their different development needs during those crucial, early teenage years.

Our commitment to the academic success of each student is clear; the best teaching staff, specialised learning environments and ‘a world of opportunity’ in our academic and co-curricular programmes

As our Middle College students progress to the Senior College, they are offered a choice of two qualification pathways. In Year 11, all students study NCEA Level 1 before making a decision whether to continue with NCEA or study towards an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

More about these qualification pathways can be read here:

Middle College Course Handbook

The Middle College Course Handbook provides detailed information about the core curriculum and the range of optional subject choices available at each Year level (Years 7 to 10). The Middle College years are a time for exploring new avenues of interest and our students are encouraged to keep their options open as long as possible.
